Sitting Up With A Sick Friend |
Here Coolidge paints a rather comical painting where two hat-wearing female dogs barge in on five male dogs who seem not to be doing something the females like. The expression on the dogs' faces are quite remarkable and varied. In the lower left one of the dogs is on all fours trying to get away while one of the females hits him with an umbrella. Moving clockwise around the table the next dog seems just to have just let out a sigh and is disgusted wondering what the females want now. The next dogs seems engrossed in the book or magazine he is reading and does not seem to even pay attention to the intrusion. The next dog is hidden from our view, but the last dog has jumped backwards from the excitement. The title probably comes from a guise the males were playing of saying one of them was sick and needs to be looked after, but instead used the time to gamble.
