Coolidge presents a rather comical painting where two hat-wearing female dogs barge in on five male dogs whose ruse about helping a supposedly sick friend was foiled. The expressions on the dogs’ faces are quite remarkable and varied. In the lower left, one of them is on all fours trying to escape while getting whacked with an umbrella. Moving counter clockwise around the table, the next dog is trying to hid his chips and just let out a sigh, disgusted and wondering what the woman wants now. The next dog is laxly engrossed in his book and is ignoring the intrusion. One dog is mostly hidden from view, but has jumped backwards from the excitement.
